The Three R's of Rx (Prescriptions) The National Council on Patient Information and Education recognized October as "Talk About Prescriptions" month. This event has been taking place for 20 years to education communities about prescription medicines. This year’s theme is The 3R’s For Safe Medicine Use. The first R is Risk. All medicines, prescription and over the counter, have benefits, but also be aware of the side effects. Be sure to read the package inserts carefully before you take a new medication. The second R is Respect. Be aware of the power and dosages of your medications. Make sure you know you are taking the right amount to ensure that you do not overdose or take to little. The third R is Responsibility. Learn how to take each medication properly and safely. Do you need to take your medicine with food or no food? Do you take it once a day or every 6 hours? Do you take it before or after you eat? Does this medicine make you dizzy or nauseated? Can you drive after taking this medicine? Do you need to refrigerate your medication? If you have any questions or concerns about a medication, new or old, be sure to ask your doctor. Also, keep a list of your medications and dosages to help out doctors and EMS personnel.
